Care instructions
Care for your travel journal as you would any other hard cover book. The covers are quite durable and not easily damaged from everyday use/ carrying in a backpack, etc.
Care for refills as you would a paper-backed book. Refill covers are made from stiff cardstock, with bookbinding cloth tape on the spines.
If you want to keep your journal in pristine condition, placing it in a cloth or plastic bag will help protect the journal's pages from catching on other objects in a backpack.

Magnet safety with Medical Devices
Medical devices:
Our Refillable covers and page refills contain Neodymium magnets.
The strong magnetic fields near a neodymium magnet can affect pacemakers, ICDs and other implanted medical devices. Many ICDs are made with a feature that deactivates it when it comes into contact with a magnet. Many Pacemakers change modes when in contact with a magnet. Once the magnet is removed, normal function resumes.
Our magnetic books should be safe as long as you do not fall asleep with them in contact with your implanted device.
If you have one of these devices, and are concerned about magnetic interference, we suggest purchasing our normal, non-refillable books instead. Our non-refillable journals may currently be ordered through our Etsy: www.etsy.com/shop/talenshistudios.
Magnet safety with technology
The strong magnetic fields near neodymium magnets can damage magnetic media such as floppy disks, credit cards, magnetic I.D. cards, cassette tapes, video tapes or other such devices. They can also damage televisions, VCRs, computer monitors and CRT displays. Avoid placing neodymium magnets near electronic appliances.
Cell phones and solid state drives should be fine.
Safety and High temperatures
Nickel Allergy Warning:
The magnets in our refillable covers and page refills are coated in nickel. They are encased in paper/ book cloth in our product. If this is a concern, please stick with our non-refillable books.
High Temperatures/ Moisture:
Neodymium magnets can become demagnetized at high temperatures or with repeat exposure to moisture. While we do not recommend leaving a refillable book in a hot car, we have also tested this for a few days with no noticeable decrease in magnetization. The glue used in binding is probably more at risk of failure with prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
What are the wooden quest signs made from?
Our wooden signs are 1/4" Baltic birch plywood, finished by hand with water based stains/ wood finishes, and laser engraved with our original designs.
How can I order a sign with different text or designs on it?
We love making custom orders! Just send us an e-mail with your idea, and we'll get you a price quote!
Will you engrave my order with an image I found?
No, we cannot engrave copyrighted material or make custom artwork that infringes on it.
If the image wasn't made by you or us, we most likely can't engrave it because it would infringe on someone else's copyright.
Will you engrave my order with an image that I commissioned from another artist?
Only if we are able to get written permission from that artist.
When picking colors for my journal cover order, which is the stain color, and which is the design color?
In this first image, red is the stain color, and black is the design color.
In this second image, black is the stain color, and red is the design color.
Do your journals lay flat?
No, our journals do not lay flat, but they do stay open on their own after some use.
When you first receive your refill or journal the pages may not want to stay open, but you can relax the binding by opening the pages to the approximate middle, laying the book on a hard surface, and gently pressing the pages open all the way. Do this again in a few other places in the page block too.
Refills made with the Tomoe River paper stay open on their own right away.
Do you have a physical location I can visit?
No, we do not have a physical store you can visit. We make everything in our home.
When conventions and festivals are possible again, we will post our upcoming vending locations on this site and on social media.
